Fertilizer:  Slow release 80% XCU 22-0-5

When it comes to lawn fertilizers, there is a very wide variety of options.  Other regular lawn fertilizers, also known as quick release fertilizers, provide a quick and concentrated release of nutrients to the grass, and typically have to be applied more frequently.  These products can be good for a quick boost of nutrients, but the results can be inconsistent, and can easily lead to over fertilization and burn the grass.

The fertilizer we use is a product called XCU Slow Release Fertilizer. Slow release fertilizers provide nutrients to the lawn over a longer period of time, usually several weeks or months.  In particular, the one we use feeds your lawn consistently for 8-12 weeks with a single application.  The fertilizer is formulated with a sulfur-coated urea (SCU) that breaks down slowly, allowing the grass to absorb the nutrients more effectively.  While SCU fertilizers have been around for many years, XCU brings a major advancement in this technology.  The patented process provides the highest nitrogen content, is the most durable, and is the longest lasting SCU on the market.  Due to the fact that this is such a high quality slow release, and contains no chemical salts, it will not burn your lawn.  Lastly, our blend also contains %3 iron in the product as well, which helps provide a much richer, deeper green to the grass.

All in all, with our service, you are getting one of the best products on the market.  It will give you a greener, lush, and healthy turf without the use of harsh chemicals.  It will also give you the peace of mind knowing that we will never burn your lawn, guaranteed.  And because a single application can feed your lawn for up to 3 months, it requires less visits to your property, allowing us to remain competitive in our pricing.

Grass Seed:

Our grass seed blend is the star of the show when it comes to our lawn care products and programs.  We use a specially formulated grass seed blend, made specifically for our climate conditions in southern Ontario. This is a product you will not find on the shelves at your local garden store, and is designed to yield the best growth for your lawn.  There are three species of grass in our mix, and they are Appalachian Kentucky Bluegrass, Boreal Creeping Red Fescue, and Fiesta 4 Perennial Ryegrass.

Appalachian Kentucky Bluegrass is a variety of species known as Kentucky Bluegrass (poa pratensis), and is native to the Appalachian region of North America.  It’s known for its fine texture, dark green colour, and its ability to establish itself in a wide range of soil and climate conditions.  Other characteristics of this variety of Kentucky Bluegrass is its excellent cold tolerance, drought tolerance, disease resistance, and its ability to be used in both sun and shade. It has aggressive rhizomatous growth, which allows it to spread and fill in bare spots, making it an excellent choice for overseeding lawns that need to be thickened.  The germination period of this particular grass seed is 10-15 days, meaning a regular watering schedule should be followed for at least 3 weeks once it is applied.  This is the primary species in our blend (about %50 of seed count).

Fiesta 4 is a variety of perennial ryegrass (lolium perenne) developed by DLF, a leading grass seed supplier.  Like the kentucky bluegrass, it also has a fine texture and a dark green colour.  This grass seed is excellent at filling out lawns quickly, as it has a very short germination period of 4-7 days.  It also produces stolons, which makes it excellent at spreading and filling in bare spots.  Grass stolons, also known as runners, are above ground horizontal stems that grow along the surface of the ground to produce new shoots of grass without additional overseeding.  Fiesta 4 has a low susceptibility to pests, is disease resistant, and an excellent wear tolerance, making it ideal for use in high-traffic areas.

Boreal creeping red fescue (festuca rubra) is a cool season, perennial, creeping grass.  It also has a relatively short germination period of 7-10 days, and forms a dense, fine textured turf.  One of the best characteristics of this species is its ability to establish a very deep root system.  This allows it to access moisture and nutrients deep in the soil, making it much more tolerant of drought and poor soil conditions than many other grasses. This also makes it a good choice for erosion control on slopes, hills, and other challenging sites.  It is hardy and adaptable, and can grow in a variety of soils and climates.  This makes it great for sun and shade, as well as alkaline and acidic soils.  Also, due to its high shade tolerance, it’s a great seed for planting under trees or other shady areas.

It is also important to note that we use Certified grass seed.  This means that the seeds that we use have been through a certification process to ensure that it meets certain standards of quality and purity.  The certification process includes several steps, some of which include:

  • Inspection of the fields where the seed is grown to ensure that they meet specific standards for weed and disease control, and that the fields are free of prohibited noxious weeds

  • Harvesting the seed in accordance with strict guidelines to ensure that the seed is of good quality and free from contaminants

  • Testing the seed to ensure that it meets strict standard for purity and germination

Top Dressing (Top Soil)

Top dressing is a service used to improve the health and appearance of the lawn by adding a thin layer of soil or compost to the surface of the lawn.  This is often done to correct soil imbalances, add nutrients, and improve the overall structure of the soil.  It is important to use a high quality soil that has been properly screened to ensure it won’t add any weeds or invasive grasses into your lawn.  Also, the material should be free of any harmful chemicals or pesticides as well as have a balanced pH level.  A good top dressing soil will have a mix of coarse and fine particles to help with drainage and water retention.

One of the most popular reasons for top dressing, especially in newly developed areas, is to correct soil imbalances. Many lawns have soil that is either too sandy or has too much clay, which can make it quite difficult for grass to establish itself and thrive.  Top dressing with a good soil or compost can help to improve the structure of these types of soil, making it much more hospitable for grass roots.  Additionally, it adds essential nutrients to the soil such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.  These nutrients are essential for the growth and health of any lawn, and top dressing is a reliable way to provide them in the right amounts.

This service is done by bringing enough soil to coat the entire lawn in a thin layer of soil.  It is then raked out evenly across the lawn.  By doing so, this also can help the overall appearance of the lawn.  This is because as the soil is added, it can fill in any low or bare spots, creating a more even and lush surface.  The best time to apply any top soil to the lawn is when it is actively growing, in the spring or the fall.  This will ensure that the grass has enough time to establish itself in the new top dressing before the hot summer or the cold winter months.

Granulated organic compost:

Granular compost is a pelletized version of traditional compost top dressing for your lawn.  This means you can get many of the same benefits of topdressing, with much less mess.  The granules are small enough to be spread across the lawn with a fertilizer spreader, making the application much easier and faster, thus cheaper as well.

Adding compost to your lawn is once of the best, and most natural, things you can do to improve your lawn.  Compost is a rich source of organic matter, which can help to improve the structure and fertility of the soil.  This makes it easier for roots to penetrate and absorb water and nutrients.  It’s also a great source of nutrients for your lawn like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which are essential for a healthier, thicker lawn.

In addition to adding many beneficial nutrients to your soil, improving the structure of  your soil creates a suitable environment for microbes to thrive in your soil as well.  Lawn microbes are the microorganisms that live in the soil of the lawn.  They include beneficial bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that play an important role in maintaining the health and fertility of the soil.  Microbes also help break down organic matter, like that pesky thatch layer.  By doing so, they help to make more essential nutrients available to the grass, allowing the lawn to grow stronger and healthier.

Lime Treatment:

Lime treatment is a process used to improve the pH level of the soil in your lawn. The pH level refers to the acidity or alkalinity of your soil, and has a significant impact on the health and growth of the lawn.  Lime treatment can come in several different application methods, and we use a granulated lime treatment spread across the lawn using a broadcast spreader.

Most lawns in southern Ontario prefer a slightly alkaline soil, with a pH level between 6 and 7.  When the soil becomes too acidic, it can cause a variety of problems for the lawn.  For example, acidic soil can make it difficult for the grass to absorb essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.  Additionally, it can make it difficult for the beneficial microorganisms in the lawn to thrive, which can inhibit the growth of the lawn.  This can lead to thinning out of the grass, discolouration, and even cause parts of the lawn to die completely.

Once the lime treatment is applied to the lawn, it raises the pH level of the soil to a more alkaline range.  Lime is made from crushed limestone, and is a natural source of calcium and magnesium.  Once added to the soil, it reacts with the acidity and neutralizes it, raising the pH level.  This has many benefits to the lawn, some of which include:

  • Makes it easier for the grass to absorb nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium

  • Allows beneficial microorganisms to thrive, making a healthier, more robust lawn

  • Improves soil structure, making it easier for roots to penetrate and absorb water and nutrients

  • Can help mitigate the damage done from dog urine

  • Reduces compaction and improves drainage

  • Helps prevent moss growth and other lawn diseases

  • Can make the lawn more resistant to pests and weeds

  • Can make the lawn more drought resistant
